How Hangul Works
Before you start

Hangul is built in blocks, not lines.

Each syllable block stacks 2 or 3 letters together. One block, one syllable. That's the whole trick.

ㅏ
ㄴ

한
han
consonant vowel final

Two blocks side by side make a word. Stack 한 + 국 and you get the name of the country.

Vowels can't stand alone, so Korean uses a silent placeholder: ㅇ. So 아 is just ㅇ + ㅏ, pronounced "a".

Don't worry. It will make sense as soon as you see it in action.
