How Hangul Works
Before you start

Hangul is built in blocks, not lines.

Each syllable block stacks 2 or 3 letters together. One block, one syllable. That's the whole trick.

consonant · vowel · final
han
consonant vowel final

Two blocks side by side make a word. Stack + and you get the name of the country.

guk

한국
han-guk
South Korea

Vowels can't stand alone, so Korean uses a silent placeholder: . So is just ㅇ + ㅏ, pronounced "a".

Don't worry. It will make sense as soon as you see it in action.
